Tapestry Dance Company Newsletter
August 13, 2007
Greetings to our Tapestry Family,
Andrea BloukosWe have alot of information to share with you as we get ready for the close of summer and the beginning of the academic year.  First, we want to thank Brenna Kuhn for her years of service as Academy Director as she steps down to focus on the upcoming tour season as a principal dancer with Tapestry. We are pleased to announce that Christy Gorman will be the new Academy Director and Deirdre Strand, Co-Founder of Tapestry, will be the new Educational Director. I think you will be excited to see the variety of classes they have been working hard to put together for both our Children's and Adult Academy.

Visions in Rhythm, Tapestry's pre-apprentice company, will be holding auditions for the 2007-2008 season on September 13th. More details are given below. Our professional company of nine dancers is gearing up for a fabulous season, both in Austin and touring throughout the United States. We are proud to inform you that Tapestry Dance Company touring performances are made possible by a 2007 NEA grant. To read more about Tapestry's community and national support, and how you can become involved, visit our website at www.tapestry.org.

We hope you enjoyed a terrific summer, and we look forward to sharing the power of dance with you throughout the fall!

Sincerely,

Andrea Bloukos

Educational Director and Academy Director Announced for 2007-2008
Thanks from Outgoing Academy Director, Brenna Kuhn
Brenna KuhnDear Academy Students and Parents,

It has been with great pleasure that I have served as Academy Director of Tapestry Dance Company Academy for the past 3 years.  As most of you know, I am also a principal dancer in the Professional Company.  This past season has been a very exciting one - the move, the new space, a grant from the NEA and many other wonderful and exciting daily pleasures.  With this wonderful grant from the NEA, Tapestry Dance Company will be touring next season bringing "The Souls of Our Feet" to cities all over the US.  In order to focus on this tour and my continued work with the professional company, I will be stepping down from my position as Academy Director.  I will still be around sharing the power of dance, performing with the company and teaching in the Academy.

We are pleased to announce that Deirdre Strand, Co-Founder of Tapestry, will be serving as Educational Director, and Christy Gorman will be taking over as Academy Director.  Christy and Deirdre shared their professional dance experiences in Fort Worth Ballet and James Clouser's Space/Dance/Theater over 20 years ago.  Christy then went on to teach dance at Stephen F. Austin University in Nagodoches, Texas. She is currently a member of the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the American College Dance Festival Association and the Pilates Physicalmind Institute.  She teaches with Deirdre at St.Stephen's Episcopal School and teaches Pilates at Body Business. Together, Deirdre and Christy will be available to give your children a positive dance experience at Tapestry. I encourage you all to stop by and introduce yourself in the coming months. Thank you for a wonderful experience and I look forward to continue seeing everyone around the halls and studios of our beautiful new facility.

Sincerely,

Brenna Kuhn
VIR Auditions
Tapestry's Pre-Apprentice Company Auditions set for September 13th
VIR 2007 Group
Visions in Rhythm (VIR) is Tapestry's pre-apprentice company. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Deirdre Strand, this junior level company is directed by Tasha Lawson and explores the Tapestry philosophy through the rehearsal process and public performance. The VIR members will rehearse with guest and resident choreographers in the development of multi-form concert works. In addition to performances at various venues throughout the year, the company performs an original concert each year in the spring.

Auditions for this season will be held at Tapestry Dance Company & Academy Studio on Thursday, September 13th.

6:30pm - Arrival/Warm-up
7:00pm - Auditions (until about 9:00pm)
Audition Fee (made out to Visions in Rhythm) - $10

Auditions are open to male and female Tapestry Academy students ages 13-18. Dancers will be required to audition in all dance disciplines, including: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern & Hip Hop. Proficiency will be expected in at least two of the five disciplines.

In addition to VIR Rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the academic year, company members must be enrolled in two academy classes (each one a different form of dance). There is a monthly fee for participation in VIR.
